Spring is here, help the bees!

March 24, 2019 by Eric Luebbert

For those wanting some plants to feed the bees here is what I recommend for in-town lawns and gardens. Now is the time to get these in the ground! The bottom 3 suggestions are very low water usage once established.

– White clover for your lawn. Not only will those little white flowers feed the bees but clover is a legume so it adds nitrogen to you soil. (McDonnell feed has a clover mix) You can set your mower to 3″ in the spring and the flowers will come back only a few days after mowing.

– Vitex tree. They produce wonderful purple flowers for the bees in the summer time when the bees really need it. (Lowes and Home Depot are starting to carry them) There are other places that sell white and pink through mail order. (almostedenplants.com)

– Anise Hyssop in the flower beds (Weston Gardens or Painted Flower Farm)

– Sweet almond verbena bush. (Weston Gardens or Painted Flower Farm)

Weston Gardens and Painted Flower Farms can give you other suggestions too on what they carry!
